A rocky childhood, a famous future: The story of a bank robber’s son

On the love front, Tobey Maguire seemed to have had good fortune for many years. He met jewelry designer Jennifer Meyer in 2003 while filming Seabiscuit, and the couple got engaged in April 2006.

Their daughter was born in November that same year, and they later tied the knot in Kailua Kona, Hawaii. Their second child, a son, arrived in May 2009.

After nine years of marriage, Maguire and Meyer announced their separation in 2016 – but it would take another four years before their divorce was finalized.

Despite the split, they have maintained a friendly relationship, with Meyer describing Maguire as “her best friend” and “the best ex-husband a girl could ever have.” During the 2025 Los Angeles wildfires, Tobey Maguire even opened his home to his ex-wife Jennifer Meyer and her new fiancé, Geoff Ogunlesi.

As Jennifer recalled, “It was the greatest.”

“I’d come home at night, and Tobey and Geoff and his best friend would be watching a movie on the couch,” she shared on one episode of The Inside Edit. “I’d be like, ‘How? This is a dream.’”

Beyond his acting, producing, and life as a dad, Tobey Maguire has also been a dedicated poker player. He’s earned a significant amount of money from the game and has competed in numerous tournaments.

Tobey Maguire’s journey is the very definition of a Hollywood success story.

From a turbulent childhood marked by instability and hardship to becoming the face of one of the most beloved superheroes of all time, his rise was never guaranteed — and that’s exactly what makes it so remarkable.
