Gunman who believed he was Jesus Christ opened fire on White House checkpoint, neutralized by Secret Service

The Incident

Shortly after 6:00 p.m. ET, an individual identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best approached the security perimeter near the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C. According to the Secret Service, Best pulled a firearm from his bag and began firing toward officers stationed at the checkpoint.

Secret Service agents immediately returned fire, striking Best. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. One bystander was also struck by gunfire during the exchange and was hospitalized; their condition has not been detailed, but no Secret Service personnel sustained injuries.
