Heartbroken, parents accept the unthinkable: taking their 13-year-old daughter off life support after a tragic sleepover.

Faced with the unthinkable, Andrea and Paul chose to speak out in order to raise awareness. Their wish: to alert other families to the dangers of certain online challenges, often presented as harmless. Their goal is not to frighten, but to inform.

They insist: “Young people don’t always realize the consequences of what they see on social media. Sometimes, simple curiosity can have irreversible effects.” Since then, the Haynes family has been sharing Esra’s message in schools, sports clubs, and the media, hoping their story can save other lives.

How can we talk about these topics with teenagers?

Discussing viral challenges or risky behaviors with a teenager can seem difficult. However, the key lies in  kind  and open communication. Rather than forbidding or judging, it’s essential to listen, explain, and provide clear guidelines.

Here are some suggestions inspired by parenting specialists:

  • Show a genuine interest in what your child watches on social media: this builds trust.
  • Ask questions without making accusations, to understand what he really thinks.
  • Inform without dramatizing: some products or actions may seem harmless, but it is useful to explain why they are not.
  • Encourage personal reflection: “What would you do if someone proposed a dangerous challenge?”

These conversations, repeated gently, allow young people to identify the pitfalls and learn to say no.

A lesson in love and hope

Despite their immense pain, Andrea and Paul want to transform their ordeal into a message of love. They hope that Esra’s story will help other parents to speak out, listen, and protect. “If even one family can prevent what we went through, then Esra’s suffering will not have been in vain,” they say, their voices filled with emotion.

Because beyond screens, trends and challenges, nothing is stronger than the bond between a parent and their child.
