My in-laws gave me $3 million to divorce their son, claiming I was “not right for him” – they were shocked by the consequences of their actions

My in-laws slipped a $3 million check onto the table and told me I wasn’t right for their son. I didn’t fit their image of the perfect woman because I’m in a wheelchair. I accepted their offer, which had consequences they could never have imagined.

My name is Eliza. I had a normal adolescence. Then, at twenty, a drunk driver ran a red light.

My parents died that night. I survived. I woke up several days later to find out I would never walk again.

That’s when I met Julian.

Julian came from a wealthy family.

He noticed when I was feeling down even before I said anything.

He fell in love with the person I was.

When he proposed to me, I cried against his shoulder for a whole twenty minutes.

But her parents, Margot and Leonard, were not pleased.

Julian came from a wealthy family.

Her parents arrived at our engagement dinner dressed as if they were going to a funeral. Margot’s smile never reached her eyes. Leonard looked at his watch every fifteen minutes.

I learned later what they thought about it.

Margot told her sister that I was “an opportunist”.

Leonard told his friends that Julian “would eventually come to his senses.”

“We’re getting married next week.”

Julian overheard their conversation. He remained silent for three days. Then he returned home with a well-considered decision.

“We’re getting married next week,” he told me. “Just the two of us. I don’t want them there.”

We got married at the town hall on a Tuesday morning. Her younger sister and my former university roommate were our witnesses. It was perfect.

That’s when Margot and Leonard realized they had lost control.

The call came ten days after our wedding.

“Eliza, my dear, I owe you an apology. I’d like to invite you to dinner. Just the two of us…”

My instinct screamed at me to refuse. But I didn’t.

“With pleasure,” I replied.

“You look well”

She chose a fancy restaurant, forty minutes from our apartment.

I arrived early in my car. I saw her come in, adorned with pearls and designer clothes. She kissed me on the cheek as if we were old friends.

“You look well,” she said as she sat down.

“Thank you,” I replied.

We placed our order. She talked about the weather, her garden, and her book club.

Then Leonard came in.

He didn’t apologize for interrupting our dinner. He simply sat down and ordered a scotch.

Margot’s expression changed instantly.

“We need to discuss something important,” she said.

A check. Made out to me.

” All right. “

Leonard took an envelope out of his jacket and placed it on the table.

I opened it slowly.

A check. Made out to me. Three million dollars.

I looked up at them.

” What is this ? “

“An opportunity,” said Margot. “For everyone to get through this with dignity.”

” Dignity ? “

Leonard leaned forward. “You seem intelligent, Eliza. Intelligent enough to recognize reality.”

” What do you mean ? “

“Julian needs a partner who can keep up with him,” Margot explained. “Someone who can travel without complications. Attend events without requiring special arrangements.”

“Divorce?”

She folded her napkin carefully. “So we’re asking you to divorce. Discreetly.”

“Divorce?”

“Here’s financial security,” Leonard added. “Three million for a nice house adapted to your disability. A comfortable life.”

Margot held out her hand, without quite touching mine. “I know you love him. That’s why it’s so difficult. But love isn’t always enough. You must realize that you’re limiting it.”

“To limit it?”

“Yes, you’re wasting his potential,” Leonard added.

I took the check.
