But things took a turn during Donald’s April 28 speech. Speaking at the White House, Donald reflected on his parents’ long marriage while addressing the royal guests. The moment began as a heartfelt tribute.
The president said his mother, Mary Anne MacLeod, who was born in Scotland, “came to America at 19 and met his “incredible father,” Fred Trump. “We loved him so much, we all loved him, we loved her, we loved him: Fred. And, they were married for 63 years,” added Donald.

Then he turned toward Melania, who was behind him with Charles and Camilla, and delivered the line that caught everyone off guard. “And, uh, excuse me, if you don’t mind, that’s a record we won’t be able to match, darling,” Donald told his wife.
The crowd laughed, but Donald didn’t stop there. “I’m sorry, it’s just not going to work out that way. We’ll do well, but we’re not going to do that well,” he added, leaning into the joke. Those two words — “I’m sorry” — quickly became the center of online discussion.
